Den Piper J-5 Cub Cruiser var en større, mere kraftfuld version af den grundlæggende Piper J-3 Cub. Den blev designet kun to år efter J-3 Cub og adskilte sig ved at have en bredere krop med piloten siddende på forsædet og to passagerer siddende på bagsædet. Flyet var udstyret med en 75 hk kontinentalmotor og havde en marchhastighed på 75 mph. Selvom det officielt er en tresæder, ville den mere præcist blive beskrevet som en "to-og-en-halv-sæder", da to voksne ville finde sig selv ret trangt på det bredere bagsæde. Cruiseren blev solgt for 1.798 dollars, da den først blev designet.

Den Piper J-5A Cub Cruiser was a light, three-seat touring monoplane developed by Piper Aircraft, serving as a larger and more powerful derivative of the highly popular J-3 Cub.

Introduced in 1940, its primary civil role was as “aviation’s lowest priced three-place airplane,” aimed at private flying, passenger-carrying, and training.

Key Design and Configuration

  • Seating: Designed for three occupants (Pilot in front, two passengers side-by-side in the wider rear seat). It was often described as a “two-and-a-half-seater” due to the cramped rear bench.
  • Motor: Drevet af en Continental A-75-8 or A-75-9 four-cylinder, horizontally-opposed, air-cooled piston engine.
  • Airframe: Construction features a steel tube fuselage and wooden spar wings, both fabric-covered, typical of Piper’s “Cub” line.
  • Successor: The J-5 series eventually led to the PA-12 “Super Cruiser,” which was more successful post-war, featuring a more powerful engine and design changes developed from the military ambulance variants (HE-1/AE-1).

The J-5A’s fuselage was noticeably wider than the J-3 Cub to accommodate the side-by-side rear seating.
