派珀 J-5A 幼崽巡洋舰 was a light, three-seat touring monoplane developed by Piper Aircraft, serving as a larger and more powerful derivative of the highly popular J-3 Cub.

Introduced in 1940, its primary civil role was as “aviation’s lowest priced three-place airplane,” aimed at private flying, passenger-carrying, and training.

Key Design and Configuration

  • Seating: Designed for three occupants (Pilot in front, two passengers side-by-side in the wider rear seat). It was often described as a “two-and-a-half-seater” due to the cramped rear bench.
  • 发动机:Continental A-75-8 or A-75-9 four-cylinder, horizontally-opposed, air-cooled piston engine.
  • Airframe: Construction features a steel tube fuselage and wooden spar wings, both fabric-covered, typical of Piper’s “Cub” line.
  • Successor: The J-5 series eventually led to the PA-12 “Super Cruiser,” which was more successful post-war, featuring a more powerful engine and design changes developed from the military ambulance variants (HE-1/AE-1).

The J-5A’s fuselage was noticeably wider than the J-3 Cub to accommodate the side-by-side rear seating.
