Hobart's Funnies were a small group of battle tanks specially modified by the 79th British Armoured Division and specialists of the Royal Engineers during the Second World War. They are named after Major-General Percy Hobart (1885-1957), a military engineer and commander of the 79th Division, and their "funny" (funny) appearance.
They were conceived after the lesson of the bad experience of the Dieppe landing1 to overcome the problems of the assault phase of the Normandy landings of June 19442,3. The Allied landings in North Africa on November 8, 1942, provided information on how best to proceed with the Normandy landings.
Hobart's Funnies served mainly on beaches where Commonwealth soldiers landed, launched into the sea in the case of amphibious DD tanks so that they would arrive at the same time as the first troops landed, or dropped off for others after the first waves of assault by Landing craft tanks (LCT).
