A Antonov An-22 “Antei” (Russian: Ан-22 Антей, An-22 Antej; English Antaeus) (NATO reporting name “Cock”) is a heavy military transport aircraft designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. Powered by four turboprop engines each driving a pair of contra-rotating propellers, the design was the first wide-body transport aircraft and remains the world’s largest turboprop-powered aircraft to date. The An-22 first appeared publicly outside the Soviet Union at the 1965 Paris Air Show. Thereafter, the model saw extensive use in major military and humanitarian airlifts for the Soviet Union, and is still in service with the Russian Air Force.

További információ:

The Antonov An-22 is a remarkable aircraft that was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union in the 1960s. It is the world’s largest turboprop-powered aircraft, with four engines each driving a pair of contra-rotating propellers. The An-22 can carry up to 80 tons of cargo over a range of more than 5000 km, and can operate from unpaved and short runways. The An-22 was used extensively by the Soviet Air Force and Aeroflot for transporting heavy and oversized equipment, such as parts of other Antonov aircraft, to remote and hard-to-reach areas.
The An-22 has a distinctive appearance, with a high-wing design and a twin tail. The aircraft has a pressurized cabin for the crew and passengers, but the cargo compartment is only partially pressurized to reduce weight and complexity. The An-22 is still in service with the Russian Air Force, and is occasionally used for civilian and humanitarian missions.
