The name Taifun (Typhoon) was given by the German aviator Elly Beinhorn, who flew a raid from Gleiwitz to Berlin to Istanbul on August 13, 1935. The Me-108 was designed as a sport and touring aircraft for the 1934 International Tourist Challenge.
It was the first all-metal aircraft with retractable landing gear and other modern features for its time. The Me-108 was also used by the Luftwaffe as a liaison and personnel transport aircraft during World War II, as well as by several other countries. The production of the Me-108 was transferred to occupied France during the war and continued after the war as the Nord 1000 Pingouin.
