Čaj FFVS J 22 is a Swedish single-engine fighter aircraft developed for the Swedish Air Force during World War II. At the onset of World War II, the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) was equipped with largely obsolete Gloster Gladiator (J 8) biplane fighters. To augment this, Sweden ordered 120 Seversky P-35 (J 9) and 144 P-66 Vanguard (J 10) aircraft from the United States. However, on 18 June 1940 after the German occupation of Norway, the United States declared an embargo against exporting weapons to any nation other than Great Britain.

Više informacija:

The FFVS J 22 was a Swedish fighter aircraft developed and built during World War II. It was designed by a team of engineers from the Royal Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) and the Flygförvaltningens Verkstad i Stockholm (FFVS), a state-owned aircraft factory. The J 22 was intended to supplement the limited number of foreign-built fighters available to Sweden, which remained neutral during the war.
The J 22 was a low-wing monoplane with a retractable tailwheel landing gear and a single-seat cockpit. It was powered by a Swedish-built version of the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engine, which gave it a top speed of 575 km/h (357 mph). The J 22 was armed with four 13.2 mm (0.52 in) m/39 machine guns or two 20 mm (0.79 in) m/41 cannons in the wings. The J 22 could also carry up to 150 kg (330 lb) of bombs under the fuselage.
The J 22 first flew on 20 September 1942 and entered service with the Flygvapnet in October 1943. A total of 198 J 22s were built, divided into two variants: the J 22A with machine guns and the J 22B with cannons. The J 22 proved to be a capable and agile fighter, comparable to contemporary Allied and Axis aircraft. It served mainly in the defense of Swedish airspace until the end of the war, and was retired from active duty in 1952.
