Den Sd.Kfz. 250 (German: Sonderkraftfahrzeug 250; ‘special motor vehicle’) was a light armoured half-track, very similar in appearance to the larger Hanomag-designed Sd.Kfz. 251, and built by the DEMAG firm, for use by Nazi Germany in World War II. Most variants were open-topped and had a single access door in the rear. The Sd. Kfz 250 was adopted in 1939 to supplement the standard half-track. Production delays meant that the first vehicle did not appear until mid-1941.

Mer info:

The Sd.Kfz. 250 was a light armoured half-track vehicle used by Nazi Germany during World War II. It was based on the Sd.Kfz. 10 chassis, but with a shorter wheelbase and a sloped armoured body. The Sd.Kfz. 250 was designed to perform various auxiliary roles, such as scouting, command, radio and observation. It could carry a crew of two and four passengers, and was armed with one or two machine guns.
The Sd.Kfz. 250 had a Maybach gasoline engine that gave it a top speed of 76 km/h (47 mph) on roads and a range of 300-320 km (190-200 mi). It had a semi-automatic transmission with seven forward and three reverse gears. The vehicle used both tracks and wheels for steering, with brakes applied to the tracks for sharper turns. The vehicle had an open top and a single rear door for access.
The Sd.Kfz. 250 was produced from 1941 to 1945, with about 6,628 units built in total. It had many variants that differed in armament, equipment and function. Some of the most common variants were:

  1. – Sd.Kfz. 250/1: The standard model with one or two MG 34 machine guns.
  2. – Sd.Kfz. 250/2: A radio vehicle with an additional antenna and radio equipment.
  3. – Sd.Kfz. 250/3: A command vehicle with an additional map table and communication devices.
  4. – Sd.Kfz. 250/4: An observation vehicle for artillery units with a periscope and binoculars.
  5. – Sd.Kfz. 250/5: A reconnaissance vehicle with an infrared device for night vision.
  6. – Sd.Kfz. 250/9: A reconnaissance vehicle with a 20 mm KwK 38 autocannon mounted on a turret.

The Sd.Kfz. 250 was widely used by the German army on all fronts, especially in Russia where it replaced some of the armoured cars that were unsuitable for the terrain and weather conditions. The vehicle was also used by some of Germany’s allies, such as Romania.
