Few aircraft designs have had as odd or complex a background as the P-40 series. In fact one wonders why the Air Corps elected to give the H-75P a designation other than a dash number in the P-36 series since it was basically a re-engined P-36A. Spin-offs from the P-36 design would result not only in the P-40 but the XP-37, XP-42, XP-46, XP-53, XP-60, and XP-62 plus the ones given Y designations and various dash numbers.
Ignoring the Curtiss Hawk biplanes, the family tree of the P-40 would seem to have its tap roots in the XP-934 Curtiss Swift of 1932 vintage. Although some experience in the low-wing monoplane type was gained when the company produced its famed Shrike series of attack planes, the Swift, or XP-31 as it was designated by the Air Corps, was their first low-wing pursuit design. By one of those odd quirks, the Swift initially was powered by an in-line engine which gave way to a more powerful radial, just the reverse of the P-36 to P-40 design development. The XP-31 was not successful with either engine and the design was soon abandoned (It did earn the dubious distinction of being the last U.S. pursuit plane with a fixed landing gear). The Curtiss Company’s fortunes took a downward turn in the pursuit field when the Boeing P-26A was selected by the Air Corps over the XP-31.

The Heinkel He 111 was a German aircraft designed by Siegfried and Walter Günter in the early 1930s in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. Often described as a “Wolf in sheep’s clothing”, it masqueraded as a transport aircraft, but its purpose was to provide the Luftwaffe with a fast medium bomber.
Perhaps the best-recognised German bomber due to the distinctive, extensively glazed, bullet-shaped “greenhouse” nose of later versions, the Heinkel was the most numerous and the primary Luftwaffe bomber during the early stages of World War II. It fared well until the Battle of Britain, when its weak defensive armament, relatively low speed, and poor manoeuvrability were exposed. Nevertheless, it proved capable of sustaining heavy damage and remaining airborne. As the war progressed, the He 111 was used in a variety of roles on every front in the European Theatre. It was used as a strategic bomber during the Battle of Britain, a torpedo bomber during the Battle of the Atlantic, and a medium bomber and a transport aircraft on the Western, Eastern, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and North African Fronts.

The Bell P-39 “Airacobra” was one of the principal fighter aircraft in service with American forces at the start of World War II. It was build by the Bell Aircraft Corporation. Its maiden flight was in April 1939. The aircraft’s unusual design featured an Allison engine mounted in the middle of the fuselage, just behind the pilot, driving the propeller through a driveshaft passing between the pilot’s feet. A 37 mm T9 cannon fired through the center of the propeller hub. Entry to the cockpit was through a side door. A Total of 9,584 examples were produced, with over half being sent to the Soviet Union under the lend-lease program.

The German Jagdpanther is regarded by the ordnance experts as one of the best tracked weapons systems during the World War 2. The awesome Pak43/3, L71 88mm gun was mounted on the proven Panther medium tank chassis. The gun was installed into the box shaped superstructure which used thick steel armor of 80mm at the front and 50mm at the sides. These frontal and side armor plates were effectively inclined to obtain an improved protection. The gun mantlet called “Saukopf” (sow head) had a thickness of 100mm.
A ball mounted MG42 bow machine gun was installed at the right side of the main gun. Weighing in at 46 tons and propelled by the powerful Maybach V12 cylinder engine, this tank destroyer had a well-balanced fire power, protection and mobility to high standards. Mass production started in January 1944 at MIAG firm, and during its production career, several improvements and alterations were made with feedback from the front lines. Early production models used a nearly flush gun mantlet collar, but it was replaced with a larger, bolt-fixed collar in October 1944. Larger diameter idler wheels were introduced at the same time. A heater for the crew compartment, and the same exhaust covers as equipped on the late production Panther G tanks were added, beginning from December. The Jagdpanther was first deployed to the Normandy campaign in June 1944, and 415 units were produced until April 1945.

The Macchi MC 200, designed by renowned engineer Mario Castoldi, has been a significant evolution in the production of Italian fighter planes. Compared to biplane Fiat Fiat CR 32 and CR 42, which were still at the beginning of the Second World War, the backbone of the Italian fighter squadrons, the Macchi MC 200 was characterized, along with his contemporary Fiat G50, for a monoplane configuration and for the metal construction throughout.
The 14-cylinder radial engine Fiat A.74 RC 38 double star could provide a power of 840 horses, and to reach a Macchi Mc 200 to 500 km / h. Compared to the corresponding hunting allies the Macchi Mc 200 was, however, not very powerful and, above all, little concrete. The armament consisted of two sun-machine guns Breda SAFAT 12.7 mm mounted above the characteristic of the engine cowling dimpled. In later versions were added two Breda machine guns-SAFAT 7.7 mm in the wings. It has been used by the Royal Air Force on the main fronts of the Second Mondial War in Africa, the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Russia.

The FM-2 Wildcat was designed and prototyped by Grumman Aircraft. More than 4000 were built by the Eastern Aircraft Division of the General Motors Company between 1943 – 1945. These aircraft incorporated a lighter airframe and a more powerful engine. This meant there was a physical design difference between the F4F and the FM-2. The FM-2 had a taller vertical tail for stability to counter the increased torque of the engine. Armament consisted of 4 – .50 cal. guns, 2 – external bomb or fuel racks and air to ground rocket launch points on the wings. These aircraft were primarily operated from escort carriers to support ground operations in the Pacific theater of operations. These same aircraft were teamed with Grumman Avengers and used in anti-sub operations in the Atlantic against U-boats.
