General Characteristics

The Saiman 202 was a 1930s Italian two-seat, low-wing cantilever monoplane, designed by Mario Bottino for the Società Industrie Meccaniche Aeronautiche Navali (SAIMAN) as a civilian touring and sport aircraft. The Saiman 202/M was the simplified military production variant ordered by the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Air Force) in 1939 to meet an urgent need for primary and advanced trainers. It was built mainly of wood and was noted for its clean aerodynamics and fixed, faired landing gear. Although used primarily in flying schools, it also served effectively throughout World War II as a **liaison aircraft** and for courier duties, remaining in Italian military use until the early 1950s.
