Den P-51 Mustang är ett amerikanskt stridsflygplan designat av North American Aviation som användes under andra världskriget. Det utvecklades för att möta det akuta behovet av ytterligare brittiska krigare 1940 under slaget om Storbritannien. Även om den är effektiv på låg höjd tack vare sin stora aerodynamiska finess, begränsar dess Allison-motor, vars superladdningssystem är lite utvecklat, initialt sin användning som luftöverlägsenhetskämpe. Efter anpassningen av den utmärkta brittiska Rolls Royce Merlin-motorn P-51D blev eskortflygplanet som USA behövde för att följa med sina stora dagtidsräder av strategiska bombplan över Tyskland. Design Engineering: Laminar Flow and the Meredith Effect
