Le P-51 Mustang er et amerikansk jagerfly designet av North American Aviation som ble brukt under andre verdenskrig. Den ble utviklet for å møte det presserende behovet for flere britiske jagerfly i 1940 under slaget om Storbritannia. Selv om den er effektiv i lav høyde takket være den store aerodynamiske finessen, begrenset Allison-motoren, hvis turboladesystem ikke er veldig avansert, i utgangspunktet bruken som en luftoverlegenhetsfighter. Etter tilpasningen av den utmerkede britiske Rolls Royce Merlin-motoren, ble P-51D ble eskorteflyet som USA trengte for å følge sine store raid på dagtid med strategiske bombefly over Tyskland.
