The ZIL-135 is a large, eight-wheeled military transport and self-propelled artillery truck produced by the Soviet Union since 1959. It was designed to carry and launch various types of artillery missiles, such as the FROG-7 and the BM-27 Uragan, from surface-to-surface. The ZIL-135 has two gasoline engines, one for each side of the vehicle, that provide a total power of 360 hp. The vehicle has eight wheel drive, but only the first and last axles are used for steering. The vehicle can reach a maximum speed of 65 km/h and has a cruising range of 500 km. The cab of the ZIL-135 is protected against nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) threats, and can accommodate a six-man crew. The ZIL-135 can emplace or displace the missile system in three minutes.
The ZIL-135 was widely exported to other communist countries, especially North Korea, where it is still used today. The ZIL-135 has several variants, such as the ZIL-135B (amphibious version), the ZIL-135E (diesel-electric version), the ZIL-135L (improved suspension version), and the ZIL-135LM (manual transmission version). The ZIL-135 was also modified by BAZ (Bryansk Automobile Plant) to produce different models, such as the BAZ-135LM (launcher for BM-27 Uragan), the BAZ-135MB (transporter for Tupolev Tu-143 drone), and the BAZ-E135G (experimental prototype with gas turbine engine).
