The Tempest was an improved derivative of the Hawker Typhoon, the type originally being known as the Typhoon II, which was intended to address the Typhoon’s unexpected fall-off of performance at high altitude by replacing its wing with a thinner laminar flow design. Having diverged considerably from the Typhoon, it was chosen to rename the aircraft Tempest. The Tempest emerged as one of the most powerful fighters of the World War II and was the fastest propeller-driven aircraft of the war at low altitude.

L'Hawker Tempest V era un cacciabombardiere britannico che ha visto l'azione nella seconda guerra mondiale. È stato sviluppato dall'Hawker Typhoon, ma aveva un'ala più sottile con flusso laminare per migliorare le sue prestazioni ad alta quota e velocità. Il Tempest V era alimentato da un motore Napier Sabre a 24 cilindri che poteva produrre fino a 3.000 cavalli con potenza di emergenza bellica. Aveva una velocità massima di 760 km/h a 5.000 metri e un'autonomia di 800 km. Era armato con quattro cannoni Hispano da 20 mm e poteva trasportare due bombe da 450 kg o otto razzi.
Il Tempest V era uno dei caccia più potenti della guerra ed eccelleva nell'intercettazione a basso livello, specialmente contro le bombe volanti V-1. Ha anche ingaggiato con successo caccia tedeschi come il Me 262. Il Tempest V entrò in servizio nel 1944 e servì con la Royal Air Force, l'Indian Air Force, la Royal New Zealand Air Force e la Pakistan Air Force fino al 1953.
