Idén om en tung kryssare uppstod i efterdyningarna av första världskriget och var nära kopplad till de gränser som sattes av mellankrigstidens Washington-sjöfördrag. Konceptet med pansarkryssare före första världskriget hade övergivits, men i deras ställe såg amiralitetet en plats för kraftfulla kryssare, som kunde patrullera det brittiska imperiets farleder, och som var tillräckligt välbeväpnade för att kunna förstöra fiendens handelskryssare. Resultatet blev en grupp brittiska krigsfartyg, kända som "Washington Treaty Cruisers", som gjorde allt som amiralitetet ville, men som överensstämde med de begränsningar som fördraget införde. Dessa imponerande kryssare var höga, rymliga och ståtliga – perfekta ambassadörer för den brittiska makten i fredstid. I krig hade de också en ansenlig slagkraft. Under andra världskriget tjänstgjorde Royal Navys tretton tunga kryssare på alla krigsskådeplatser, oavsett om de mötte Bismarck i Nordatlanten eller uthärdade kamikazeattacker i Stilla havet.

Fotogalleri av en MiG-29, The Mikoyan MiG-29 is a fourth-generation jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union for an air superiority role. Developed in the 1970s by the Mikoyan design bureau, it entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1983, and remains in use by the Russian Air Force as well as in many other nations. The NATO name “Fulcrum” was sometimes unofficially used by Soviet pilots in service. Den italienska armén, till skillnad från den brittiska och franska, använde inte stridsvagnar i strid under första världskriget och i november 1918 hade endast en träningsenhet utrustad med franska Schneider- och Renault-stridsvagnar bildats. Följaktligen hade den italienska armén under 1920-talet bara en enda stridsvagnstyp i sitt pansarförråd – Fiat 3000. Den Grumman F-14 Tomcat är ett överljudsflygplan med två motorer, två säten och variabla vingar. Tomcat utvecklades för USA:s flottas program Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) efter kollapsen av F-111B-projektet. F-14 var den första av de amerikanska tonårs-serien fighters som designades med erfarenhet av luftstrider mot MiG-fighters under Vietnamkriget.

The advent of combined arms operations in World War II created the need for specialized armored vehicles. In the case of amphibious attacks, the issue arose of how best to land tanks on a beach. Although a variety of specialized landing craft were developed, the Dieppe raid in 1942 encouraged the development of tanks that could be deployed from further off-shore to limit the vulnerability of the LCT craft. The deep-wading equipment that they developed was first used during Operation Husky on Sicily in July 1943, and subsequently for Operations Avalanche (Salerno, September 1943), Shingle (Anzio, January 1944) and Overlord (Normandy, June 1944). The US-manufactured DD tanks were used during Overlord by both US and British forces, and again in 1945 during the Rhine crossings. Initially, developments in the Pacific Theater were separate from those in Europe. The Marines learned from the Tarawa landings in 1943 that unprepared tanks could not be safely landed even in shallow water. DD tanks were never seriously considered for the Pacific, so other solutions were sought. A detailed study of specialized US amphibious tanks, this is a title that will appeal to those interested in both Pacific and European Theaters, modellers and collectors.
