The Sikorsky S-61R is a helicopter developed by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation as a derivative of the S-61/SH-3 Sea King. It is designed for transport and search and rescue missions, as well as special operations support. The S-61R has a redesigned fuselage with a rear loading ramp, a conventional watertight structure instead of the boat-shaped hull of the S-61, and a retractable nose wheel landing gear. The S-61R is powered by two General Electric T58-10 turboshaft engines, each producing 1,500 horsepower, driving a five-bladed main rotor and a five-bladed tail rotor. The S-61R can carry up to 25 passengers or 15 stretchers, and can be armed with torpedoes, depth charges, or machine guns for anti-submarine or anti-surface warfare. The S-61R was first flown in 1963 and entered service with the US Air Force as the CH-3C in 1965. It was also used by the US Coast Guard as the HH-3F Pelican, and by the Italian Air Force as the HH-3F Pellicano. The S-61R was produced until 1980, with a total of 275 units built by Sikorsky and its licensees.
