Tá K1 je jihokorejský hlavní bojový tank v použití s korejskými ozbrojenými silami vyvinutý společností Hyundai Precision (později Hyundai Rotem). Rané konstrukční práce vozidla byly založeny na M1 Abrams společnosti General Dynamics, s některými znatelnými rozdíly, včetně kombinovaného systému hydropneumatických závěsných a torzních tyčí a soupravy pro křížení řek, aby splňovaly požadované operační schopnosti, které byly specifické pro bojové operace v hornatém a bažinatém terénu Korejského poloostrova. K1A1 vstoupil do služby v roce 1999, vylepšený o 120 mm smoothbore dělo a vybaven modernější elektronikou, balistickými počítači a systémy řízení palby vyvinutými společností Samsung Electronics. Hyundai Rotem vyráběl v letech 1985 až 2010 1 511 tanků K1 a K1A1.

General Characteristics

The K1 Main Battle Tank, also referred to as the Type 88 (88 전차), was the first domestically developed tank of the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA). Its design, which began in the early 1980s, was heavily influenced by the US M1 Abrams, but was modified to suit South Korea’s specific operational requirements, particularly its mountainous terrain. This led to unique features like the hybrid hydropneumatic and torsion bar suspension system and a lower profile than the M1 Abrams. The K1 series remains the backbone of the ROKA’s armored forces.
