De K1 is een Zuid-Koreaanse gevechtstank in gebruik bij de Republiek Korea Armed Forces, ontwikkeld door Hyundai Precision (later Hyundai Rotem). Het vroege ontwerpwerk van het voertuig was gebaseerd op de M1 Abrams van General Dynamics, met enkele merkbare verschillen, waaronder een gecombineerd systeem van hydropneumatische ophangings- en torsiestaven en een door de rivier overstekende doordrenkingskit, om te voldoen aan de vereiste operationele capaciteit die specifiek was voor gevechtsoperaties in het bergachtige en moerassige terrein van het Koreaanse schiereiland. De K1A1 kwam in 1999 in gebruik, werd geüpgraded met een 120 mm smoothbore-pistool en uitgerust met modernere elektronica, ballistische computers en brandbestrijdingssystemen ontwikkeld door Samsung Electronics. Hyundai Rotem produceerde tussen 1985 en 2010 1.511 K1- en K1A1-tanks.

General Characteristics

The K1 Main Battle Tank, also referred to as the Type 88 (88 전차), was the first domestically developed tank of the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA). Its design, which began in the early 1980s, was heavily influenced by the US M1 Abrams, but was modified to suit South Korea’s specific operational requirements, particularly its mountainous terrain. This led to unique features like the hybrid hydropneumatic and torsion bar suspension system and a lower profile than the M1 Abrams. The K1 series remains the backbone of the ROKA’s armored forces.
