Le K1 È un carro armato da battaglia sudcoreano in uso con le Forze Armate della Repubblica di Corea, sviluppato da Hyundai Precision (in seguito Hyundai Rotem). I primi lavori di progettazione del veicolo si basavano sull'M1 Abrams della General Dynamics, con alcune differenze evidenti tra cui un sistema combinato di sospensioni idropneumatiche e barre di torsione, e un kit di fording di attraversamento del fiume, per soddisfare la capacità operativa richiesta che era specifica per le operazioni di combattimento nel terreno montuoso e paludoso della penisola coreana. Il K1A1 entrò in servizio nel 1999, aggiornato con un cannone smoothbore da 120 mm e dotato di elettronica più moderna, computer balistici e sistemi di controllo del fuoco sviluppati da Samsung Electronics. Hyundai Rotem ha prodotto 1.511 serbatoi K1 e K1A1 tra il 1985 e il 2010.

General Characteristics
The K1 Main Battle Tank, also referred to as the Type 88 (88 전차), was the first domestically developed tank of the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA). Its design, which began in the early 1980s, was heavily influenced by the US M1 Abrams, but was modified to suit South Korea’s specific operational requirements, particularly its mountainous terrain. This led to unique features like the hybrid hydropneumatic and torsion bar suspension system and a lower profile than the M1 Abrams. The K1 series remains the backbone of the ROKA’s armored forces.
