Tthe P-51 Mustang to amerykański samolot myśliwski zaprojektowany przez North American Aviation, który był używany podczas II wojny światowej. Został opracowany w celu zaspokojenia pilnej potrzeby dodatkowych brytyjskich myśliwców w 1940 roku podczas Bitwy o Anglię. Chociaż wydajny na małej wysokości dzięki świetnej aerodynamicznej finezji, jego silnik Allison, którego system doładowania jest mało rozwinięty, początkowo ogranicza jego zastosowanie jako myśliwca przewagi powietrznej. Po adaptacji doskonałego brytyjskiego silnika Rolls Royce Merlin, P-51D stał się samolotem eskortowym, którego Stany Zjednoczone potrzebowały do towarzyszenia dużym dziennym nalotom bombowców strategicznych nad Niemcami. Na początku 1944 r. miał decydujący udział w uzyskaniu przewagi powietrznej, która pozwoliła na inwazję na Europę. Jest to jeden z trzech głównych amerykańskich myśliwców II wojny światowej pod względem liczby, z 15 586 wyprodukowanymi egzemplarzami2. Jego głównymi atutami są szybkość, a zwłaszcza bardzo duży promień działania. Wielu uważa go za najlepszy myśliwiec śmigłowy wszechczasów. Nazwa Mustang samolotu jest podawany przez Brytyjczyków, Amerykanie najpierw ochrzcili go Apache przed przyjęciem brytyjskiej nazwy.
