The Airbus A400M Atlas is a European four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. It was designed by Airbus Military (now Airbus Defence and Space) as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities to replace older transport aircraft, such as the Transall C-160 and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. The A400M is between the C-130 and the Boeing C-17 in size; it can carry heavier loads than the C-130 and is able to use rough landing strips. Along with the transport role, the A400M can perform aerial refueling and medical evacuation when fitted with appropriate equipment.

General Characteristics

The Airbus A400M Atlas (originally named “Grizzly”) is a multi-national four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. Developed by Airbus Military (now Airbus Defence and Space), it was designed to bridge the gap between smaller tactical airlifters, like the C-130 Hercules, and larger strategic airlifters, like the C-17 Globemaster III. The A400M combines the capability to carry oversized loads (strategic) with the ability to land on rough, short unprepared strips (tactical). Its unique feature is the use of powerful Europrop TP400-D6 turboprop engines, which drive eight-bladed scimitar propellers. It is a key asset for European and international armed forces, fulfilling transport, air-to-air refueling, and medical evacuation roles.

    • Troops: Up to 116 fully equipped paratroopers or 66 stretchers (for MEDEVAC).
    • Vehicles: Can carry one CH-47 Chinook helicopter (fuselage only), one Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopter, or one Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma helicopter (fully assembled).
    • Heavy Armor: Can transport heavy vehicles like the Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicle or the Patria AMV (Armored Modular Vehicle).
  • Operational Feature: The aircraft can deploy a full cargo load via parachute and is equipped for air-to-air refueling of compatible fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
