Den Airbus A400M Atlas är ett europeiskt fyrmotorigt turboprop militärt transportflygplan. Det designades av Airbus Military (nu Airbus Defence and Space) som en taktisk flyglyftare med strategiska möjligheter att ersätta äldre transportflygplan, såsom Transall C-160 och Lockheed C-130 Hercules. A400M är mellan C-130 och Boeing C-17 i storlek; den kan bära tyngre laster än C-130 och kan använda grova landningsremsor. Tillsammans med transportrollen kan A400M utföra lufttankning och medicinsk evakuering när den är utrustad med lämplig utrustning.

General Characteristics

The Airbus A400M Atlas (originally named “Grizzly”) is a multi-national four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. Developed by Airbus Military (now Airbus Defence and Space), it was designed to bridge the gap between smaller tactical airlifters, like the C-130 Hercules, and larger strategic airlifters, like the C-17 Globemaster III. The A400M combines the capability to carry oversized loads (strategic) with the ability to land on rough, short unprepared strips (tactical). Its unique feature is the use of powerful Europrop TP400-D6 turboprop engines, which drive eight-bladed scimitar propellers. It is a key asset for European and international armed forces, fulfilling transport, air-to-air refueling, and medical evacuation roles.
