1949年、アメリカ陸軍は6×6台の戦術トラックを評価した余分な頑丈な10トン(9,072 kg)のオフロードの家族のための要件を設定しました。 マック’s design, influenced by their WWII era NO, was chosen. Designed as an entire family, only the semi-tractor and cargo/prime mover were built. 392 M123s were built between 1955 and 1957 and 552 M125s in 1957 and 1958. In 1965 CONDEC began building 3188 diesel powered M123As, Mack began building 420 in 1968. In 1969 Mack then upgraded 210 gas engine models to diesel power. With the Army using more self‑propelled artillery, the need for prime movers was reduced, no follow‑up orders for M125s were made. Both M123s and M125s saw service in the Vietnam War. M123 tractors remained in Army service into the 1990s.

General Characteristics and Role

The M123A1C was a powerful American heavy tractor truck developed primarily for the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force in the 1950s and 1960s. It was designed to pull heavy specialized trailers, most notably the M15 semi-trailer, which transported large, non-divisible loads such as tanks, heavy construction equipment, and strategic missiles. The M123 series featured an unusual 10×10 drive configuration (all ten wheels powered) which, combined with the truck’s massive size, provided excellent cross-country mobility and exceptional tractive effort. The M123A1C was an improved variant of the M123, notably featuring a more powerful engine and improved braking systems.

  • Tractive Effort: Designed to pull semi-trailers with payloads up to 40 tons, enabling the transport of main battle tanks like the M48 Patton.

⛓️ Design Features and Legacy

  • Drive System: The unique 10×10 configuration consisted of four axles in the rear (two twin-axle bogies) and two axles in the front, all providing power, maximizing traction.
  • Winch: Equipped with a heavy-duty winch for self-recovery and loading operations.
  • Service History: The M123 series was the primary heavy tank transporter of the U.S. Army through the 1950s and 60s, playing a key logistical role during the Vietnam War.
  • Successor: The M123 series was eventually replaced by the M911 and later the Oshkosh HET (Heavy Equipment Transporter) series, which used more modern technology.
