A-17s used by air forces of the British Commonwealth designated the aircraft as the “Nomad.”

1. A-17A first flew in September 1935 and entered service with the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1936. It was the first monoplane attack aircraft adopted by the U.S. military and proved to be reliable and versatile. The A-17A saw combat in several countries during World War II, including China, the Philippines, Finland, Sweden, and Peru. It was also exported to several other nations, such as France, Norway, Argentina, and South Africa. The A-17A was gradually replaced by more advanced aircraft such as the Douglas A-20 Havoc and the North American B-25 Mitchell in the early 1940s. The last A-17A was retired from service in 1945.
