The Kamov Ka-50 Hokum is a single-seat Russian attack helicopter with the distinctive coaxial rotor system of the Kamov design bureau. It was designed in the 1980s and adopted for service in the Russian army in 1995. It is currently manufactured by the Progress company in Arsenyev. It is used as a heavily armed scout helicopter and has the NATO reporting name Hokum A.
The Ka-50 is notable for its ejection seat, which allows the pilot to escape at all altitudes and speeds. The Ka-50 is also equipped with a variety of weapons, including anti-tank guided missiles, rockets, and a 30 mm cannon. The Ka-50 can also carry air-to-air missiles for self-defense. The Ka-50 has a high degree of maneuverability and can perform aerobatic maneuvers such as loops, rolls, and the “funnel”, where the helicopter describes a circle while keeping its nose pointed at a fixed point.
The Ka-50 has seen combat action in Chechnya, where it proved to be a formidable weapon against rebel forces. It has also been exported to several countries, including Algeria, Egypt, and Turkey. The Ka-50 is planned to be replaced by the Ka-52 Alligator, a two-seat version with improved avionics and weapons systems.
