The AgustaWestland AW101 is a medium-lift helicopter that can perform various military and civil roles. It was first flown in 1987 and entered service in 1999. It is a result of a joint venture between Westland Helicopters of the United Kingdom and Agusta of Italy, which later merged to form AgustaWestland.
The AW101 has three Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 turboshaft engines, which give it a maximum speed of 309 km/h and a range of 833 km. The AW101 can carry up to 26 passengers or 5 tonnes of cargo, and can be equipped with various weapons and sensors for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, transport, utility and VIP missions. The AW101 has been exported to several countries, including Denmark, Portugal, Canada, Japan and Algeria. It is also known as Merlin by some operators.
