De SSM-N-8A Regulus of de Regulus I was a United States Navy-developed ship-and-submarine-launched, nuclear-capable turbojet-powered second generation cruise missile, deployed from 1955 to 1964. Its development was an outgrowth of U.S. Navy tests conducted with the German V-1 missile at Naval Air Station Point Mugu in California. Its barrel-shaped fuselage resembled that of numerous fighter aircraft designs of the era, but without a cockpit. Test articles of the Regulus were equipped with landing gear and could take off and land like an airplane. When the missiles were deployed they were launched from a rail launcher, and equipped with a pair of Aerojet JATO bottles on the aft end of the fuselage.

Meer info:

De SSM-N-8 Regulus was a subsonic cruise missile developed by the United States Navy in the 1950s. It was designed to carry a nuclear warhead and could be launched from submarines or surface ships. The Regulus was the first operational nuclear-armed missile of the US Navy and served as a deterrent against the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
The Regulus had a range of about 500 miles and a speed of about 600 mph. It used a turbojet engine and a radio guidance system that required a control aircraft or ship to steer it to its target. The Regulus was retired in 1964 and replaced by the Polaris ballistic missile system.
