General Characteristics

The Kaman K-MAX is a unique, single-seat, twin-rotor helicopter specifically designed for repetitive external cargo lift operations, essentially functioning as an “aerial truck.” Its key design feature is the use of intermeshing, counter-rotating rotors (a synchropter configuration), which eliminates the need for a tail rotor, directing all engine power to vertical lift.

Design and Powerplant

Engine: One Honeywell T53-17A-1 turboshaft engine.
Power Output: Flat-rated to approximately 1,007 kW (1,350 shp) for long life and high-altitude performance, with a thermodynamic rating of 1,800 shp.
Rotor System: Twin, counter-rotating, intermeshing main rotors (synchropter). This design cancels torque without a tail rotor, making the aircraft highly efficient for lift.
Cargo Hook Capacity: 2,722 kg (6,000 lb). The helicopter’s lift capacity is greater than its empty weight.
Control System: Features a unique servo-flap control system on the rotor blades, eliminating complex hydraulics from the main flight controls (though later variants use a blend of systems).
