Initialement désigné comme le SA-16 pour l’USAF et le JR2F-1 et UF-1 pour l’USN et l’USCG, il a été rebaptisé HU-16 en 1962.

Lla Albatros Grumman HU-16 is a large amphibious flying boat that was used by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard from the late 1940s to the 1970s. It was designed for search and rescue missions, as well as maritime patrol and transport. The Albatross could land and take off from both water and land, making it versatile and adaptable to different environments. The Albatross had a wingspan of 96 feet, a length of 62 feet and a height of 25 feet. It could carry up to 10 passengers or 5,000 pounds of cargo. It had a maximum speed of 236 miles per hour and a range of 2,850 miles. The Albatross was powered by two Wright R-1820-76 Cyclone radial engines, each producing 1,425 horsepower.
