Le Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer’s first jet fighter and one of the United States Navy’s first successful carrier-based jet fighters. A single-engined, straight-winged day fighter, it was armed with four 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon and could carry a wide assortment of air-to-ground munitions. The Panther was used extensively by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in the Korean War. It was also the first jet aircraft used by the Blue Angels flight team, used by them from 1949 through late 1954. The aircraft was exported to Argentina and was the first jet used by the Argentine Naval Aviation. Total F9F production was 1,382. The design evolved into the swept wing Grumman F-9 Cougar.

Il Grumman F9F Panther è stato il primo caccia a reazione utilizzato dalla Marina degli Stati Uniti e dal Corpo dei Marines nella guerra di Corea. È stato progettato alla fine del 1940 come un caccia basato su portaerei che poteva operare dalle nuove portaerei a ponte angolato. Il Panther aveva un design ad ala dritta e un singolo motore turbogetto Pratt & Whitney J48 che gli conferiva una velocità massima di 575 mph. Il Panther era armato con quattro cannoni da 20 mm e poteva trasportare fino a 2.000 libbre di bombe o razzi. Il Panther fu anche il primo aereo a reazione ad essere dotato di un seggiolino eiettabile.
Il Panther entrò in servizio nel 1949 e combatté nella guerra di Corea dal 1950 al 1953. È stato utilizzato per il combattimento aria-aria, l'attacco al suolo e le missioni di ricognizione. Il Panther mise a segno la prima uccisione jet-versus-jet della storia quando il tenente comandante William T. Amen abbatté un MiG-15 nordcoreano il 9 novembre 1950. Il Panther volò anche la prima missione di combattimento a reazione sulla Cina il 21 febbraio 1952. Il Panther si dimostrò affidabile ed efficace, ma fu presto surclassato dal più veloce e manovrabile MiG-15. Il Panther fu sostituito dal Grumman F9F Cougar ad ala a freccia nel 1954.
La Panther fu esportata anche in Argentina e Uruguay, dove servì fino alla fine degli anni 1960. Furono costruiti un totale di 1.382 Panther, di cui 78 furono persi in combattimento.
