Le Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer’s first jet fighter and one of the United States Navy’s first successful carrier-based jet fighters. A single-engined, straight-winged day fighter, it was armed with four 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon and could carry a wide assortment of air-to-ground munitions. The Panther was used extensively by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in the Korean War. It was also the first jet aircraft used by the Blue Angels flight team, used by them from 1949 through late 1954. The aircraft was exported to Argentina and was the first jet used by the Argentine Naval Aviation. Total F9F production was 1,382. The design evolved into the swept wing Grumman F-9 Cougar.

Il Grumman F9F Panther è stato uno dei primi caccia a reazione basati su portaerei di successo della Marina e del Corpo dei Marines degli Stati Uniti. È stato sviluppato da Grumman in risposta a una richiesta della Marina per un caccia diurno monomotore con un potente armamento e un lungo raggio. Il Panther aveva un design ad ala dritta ed era alimentato da un motore turbogetto Pratt & Whitney J42, che era una versione costruita su licenza del britannico Rolls-Royce Nene. Il Panther poteva trasportare quattro cannoni da 20 mm e varie armi aria-terra, come bombe e razzi.
Il Panther volò per la prima volta nel novembre 1947 ed entrò in servizio nel 1949. Ha visto ampie azioni di combattimento durante la guerra di Corea, dove ha dimostrato di essere un efficace cacciabombardiere contro bersagli terrestri e un abile dogfighter contro i jet nemici. Il Panther divenne anche il primo aereo a reazione utilizzato dalla pattuglia acrobatica Blue Angels dal 1949 al 1954. Il Panther fu successivamente modificato con ali a freccia e rinominato Grumman F-9 Cougar. Il Cougar aveva migliorato le prestazioni e l'aerodinamica, ma mantenne gran parte della cellula e del motore del Panther. Il Cougar entrò in servizio nel 1952 e servì fino al 1965 con varie unità navali. Ha anche visto azioni di combattimento limitate durante la guerra del Vietnam. Il Cougar fu esportato in Argentina e utilizzato dalla sua aviazione navale fino al 1969.
