Galleria fotografica di un Fiat CR.42, The Fiat CR.42 Falco was a single-seat sesquiplane fighter that served primarily in Italy’s Regia Aeronautica before and during World War II. The aircraft was produced by Fiat Aviazione, and entered service, in smaller numbers, with the air forces of Belgium, Sweden and Hungary. With more than 1,800 built, it was the most numerous Italian aircraft in World War II. The CR.42 was the last of the Fiat biplane fighters to enter front line service, and represented the epitome of the type, along with the Gloster Gladiator.

Il Fiat CR.42 Falco era un biplano da caccia monoposto sviluppato e prodotto dalla società italiana Fiat Aviazione alla fine del 1930. Fu l'ultimo caccia biplano ad entrare in servizio nel mondo, e vide l'azione in diversi teatri della seconda guerra mondiale, come l'Europa, il Nord Africa e il Mediterraneo. Il CR.42 era basato sul successo del Fiat CR.32, ma aveva un motore più potente, un motore radiale Fiat A.74 RC38 che erogava 840 CV e una fusoliera più aerodinamica. Il CR.42 poteva raggiungere una velocità massima di 441 km/h, un tetto di 10.210 m e un'autonomia di 780 km. Era armato con due mitragliatrici Breda-SAFAT da 12,7 mm e poteva trasportare fino a 200 kg di bombe. Il CR.42 fu elogiato dai suoi piloti per la sua agilità e manovrabilità, ma fu surclassato da caccia monoplani più veloci e moderni, come lo Spitfire e il Messerschmitt Bf 109. Il CR.42 è stato utilizzato anche in vari ruoli, come caccia notturno, attacco al suolo e addestratore. È stato esportato in diversi paesi, tra cui Belgio, Svezia e Ungheria. Un totale di 1.781 CR.42 furono costruiti tra il 1939 e il 1943.
