Hawk Missile

Jian Ji-2 + Jian Ji-5

En modell av varumärket Cyber-Hobby satsen : Jian Ji-2 + Jian Ji-5 – Cyber-Hobby 2517. The MiG-15 and MiG-17 are famous Russian-designed fighters of the Cold War period. With Russian technological assistance, China copied the MiG-17 as the J-5 (Jian J-5) and commenced local production in the 1950s. The J-5 built by Shenyang was a single-seat interceptor based on the MiG-17F Fresco-C, plus China also exported it as the F-5. The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) obtained plans for the J-5 in 1955 and the first aircraft flew the following year. Before production ceased in 1969, the PLAAF had received 767 J-5 and J-5A fighters. The J-2, meanwhile, was the Chinese designation for approximately 2,000 Soviet-produced MiG-15 fighters that were imported to serve in the PLAAF from 1950-55. The J-2 was flown widely by China during the Korean War, and the PLAAF only retired its last J-2 examples in 1986. Orange Box is offering a special 1+1 set featuring both a J-2 and a J-5. The two model fighters are built accurately to 1/72 scale, and they perfectly capture the look of the MiG-15 and MiG-17 from whence they are derived. Well-detailed and well-engineered components fit together with pleasing precision. Of course, the set includes appropriate PLAAF decal markings for these two aircraft types that served faithfully in China’s early years. And as modelers have come to expect, this useful Orange Box set comes with an extremely reasonable price tag.

U.S.S. Ingersoll (DD-990) + DELTA III SSBN

En modell av varumärket Cyber-Hobby satsen : U.S.S. Ingersoll + DELTA III SSBN – Cyber-Hobby 7114.

Fortunately the Cold War never boiled over into armed combat between the USA and USSR. If it had, at the forefront would have been naval vessels fighting to dominate the oceans. Such a conflict would have included surface combatants playing cat and mouse with enemy submarines. The newest Orange Box set offers such likely adversaries – a Soviet Delta III nuclear-missile submarine and a US Navy destroyer. The 13,500-ton Delta class SSBN formed the backbone of the Soviet submarine fleet after its introduction in 1973. The Delta III (Project 667BDR) carried 16 R-29-family Vysota nuclear ballistic missiles, and 14 such Kalmar-class SSBNs were built. USS Ingersoll (DD 990), a Spruance-class vessel, was one of those destroyers that would have been tasked with countering Soviet submarines. This particular 8,040-ton ship was commissioned in 1980, and after a relatively short service life it was decommissioned in 1998.

Both these vessels are represented by superb 1/700 scale plastic models. Modelers will find that the well-engineered parts precisely fit together. Of course, as an Orange Box item, this versatile Cold War naval combination offers a simply unbeatable price. Now modelers can recreate those tense bygone days of the Cold War, where the USA and USSR faced off above and below the waves!

Den Saab 35 Draken (“the kite” or “the dragon”) was a Swedish fighter aircraft developed and manufactured by Saab between 1955 and 1974. It was the first fully supersonic aircraft to be deployed in Western Europe. The Draken was developed during the 1940s and 1950s to replace Sweden’s first generation of jet-powered fighter aircraft, the Saab J 29 Tunnan and, later, the fighter variant (J 32B) of the Saab 32 Lansen. It featured an innovative “double-delta” wing; in order to test this previously-unexplored aerodynamic feature, a sub-scale test aircraft, the Saab 210, was produced and flown. Developed in Sweden, the Draken was introduced into service with the Royal Swedish Air Force (RSAF) on 8 March 1960. Early models were intended purely to perform air defence missions, the type being considered to be a capable dogfighter for the era.
