O ESFINGE (Projeto Secreto para Alta Intensidade e Novos Conflitos) foi desenvolvido pela Panhard como um empreendimento privado para atender a um requisito EBCR (Engine Blinde de Reconnaissance et de Combat) do Exército Francês. O EBRC significa veículo blindado para reconhecimento e combate. Um novo veículo blindado destina-se a substituir o envelhecido AMX-10RC e o ERC-90 Sagaie.

The SPHINX was a 6×6 armored vehicle concept developed by Panhard (now Arquus) as a private venture and a candidate for the French Army’s EBRC (Armoured Vehicle for Reconnaissance and Combat) program, aimed at replacing the older ERC-90 Sagaie.
