The aircraft was designed to replace the aging fleet of F-5 fighters and F-104 Starfighters in the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF). The F-CK-1 is a twin-engine, single-seat fighter with a delta wing and canard configuration. It has a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 and a combat radius of 1,100 km. The aircraft is equipped with a multifunction radar, a fly-by-wire flight control system, and an electronic warfare suite.
The F-CK-1 can carry a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, including Sidewinder, Sky Sword, Tien Chien, Maverick, and Wan Chien missiles, as well as bombs and rockets. The F-CK-1 entered service with the ROCAF in 1994 and has been upgraded several times since then. The latest version, the F-CK-1C/D, features improved avionics, radar, and weapons systems. The F-CK-1 is also exported to other countries under the name Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF).
