The Kurogane Type 95 was a scout car used by the Imperial Japanese Army during the war with China and World War II in the East. The Type 95 was built by Tokyu Kurogane Industries, and was one of the world’s first mass-produced four-wheel drive vehicles. It had a two-cylinder, air-cooled engine that produced 33 horsepower, and could accommodate three people. The Type 95 was intended for reconnaissance, message delivery, and personnel transport, especially in rough terrain and jungle conditions. It had tall wheels that helped it overcome obstacles, mud, and snow. The Type 95 was not armed or armored, and was often called “daruma” by the soldiers after the Buddhist symbol for good luck. Between 1936 and 1944, about 4,700 Type 95s were produced, but only a few survive today.
