Hellmut G. Haasis ble født i 1942 i byen Mühlacker i det sørvestlige Tyskland. Hans studier inkluderte teologi, historie, sosiologi og statsvitenskap. Han er forfatter av Joseph Süß Oppenheimer, genannt Jud Süß: Finanzier, Freidenker, Justizopfer og av Tod i Prag: Das Attentat auf Reinhard Heydrich. Han har også utgitt noveller, dikt, dramaer og hørespill, samt en roman på schwabisk dialekt. Han er mottaker av Thaddäus Troll-prisen, Schubart-prisen og Civis-prisen.William Odom studerte ved Freie Üniversität Berlin, og kom inn på universitetet i 1961 da byggingen av muren begynte. Han har en doktorgrad i tysk fra Tulane University.
