General Characteristics (J-8II/Finback-B Variant)

The Shenyang J-8, code-named Finback by NATO, is a Chinese twin-engine, single-seat interceptor fighter. The original J-8 design, with a nose intake (Finback-A), was an enlarged, twin-engine derivative of the MiG-21/J-7. The significantly redesigned J-8II replaced the nose cone with a solid radome and side intakes to accommodate a larger fire-control radar, turning it into a more capable all-weather fighter.

Design and Powerplant

Engines: Two Liyang Wopen-13A-II afterburning turbojets (on J-8II).

Design Origin: The early J-8 was heavily influenced by the Soviet MiG-21, specifically featuring a delta wing and conventional tail.
J-8II Redesign: The J-8II adopted a new forward fuselage with side air intakes (similar to the MiG-23) to allow the nose to house a more powerful pulse-Doppler radar.
Construction: Predominantly all-metal construction.
Variants: Later variants (J-8D, J-8F, J-8H) added features like in-flight refueling (IFR) probes, upgraded avionics, and improved weapon compatibility.
