General Characteristics (J-8II/Finback-B Variant)
The Shenyang J-8, code-named Finback by NATO, is a Chinese twin-engine, single-seat interceptor fighter. The original J-8 design, with a nose intake (Finback-A), was an enlarged, twin-engine derivative of the MiG-21/J-7. The significantly redesigned J-8II replaced the nose cone with a solid radome and side intakes to accommodate a larger fire-control radar, turning it into a more capable all-weather fighter.

Design and Powerplant
- Engines: Two Liyang Wopen-13A-II afterburning turbojets (on J-8II).
- Thrust Output (with afterburner): Approximately 65.9 kN (14,815 lbf) each.
- Design Origin: The early J-8 was heavily influenced by the Soviet MiG-21, specifically featuring a delta wing and conventional tail.
- J-8II Redesign: The J-8II adopted a new forward fuselage with side air intakes (similar to the MiG-23) to allow the nose to house a more powerful pulse-Doppler radar.
- Construction: Predominantly all-metal construction.
- Variants: Later variants (J-8D, J-8F, J-8H) added features like in-flight refueling (IFR) probes, upgraded avionics, and improved weapon compatibility.
Performance and Armament
- Maximum Speed: Mach 2.2 (around 2,340 km/h or 1,453 mph) at high altitude.
- Service Ceiling: 20,200 m (66,275 ft).
- Maximum Range (Ferry): Approximately 2,200 km (1,400 nautical miles) with external tanks.
- Rate of Climb: High rate, approximately 12,000 m/min (39,370 ft/min).
- Fixed Armament (J-8II): One 23 mm Type 23-3 (GSh-23L) twin-barrel cannon.
- Hardpoints: Typically seven external hardpoints (one centerline, six underwing).
- Typical Armament Options: PL-2/PL-5/PL-7 short-range IR-homing air-to-air missiles; later variants (J-8D/F) integrated medium-range radar-guided missiles like the PL-11 or PL-12.
