Le Lockheed S-3 Viking è un aereo a reazione bimotore turbofan a quattro posti che è stato utilizzato dalla Marina degli Stati Uniti per identificare e tracciare i sottomarini nemici. Alla fine degli anni 1990, l'attenzione della missione dell'S-3B si spostò sulla guerra di superficie e sul rifornimento aereo. La Viking fornì anche capacità di guerra elettronica e sorveglianza di superficie al gruppo di battaglia della portaerei. Un velivolo multi-missione basato su portaerei, subsonico, per tutte le stagioni e multi-missione a lungo raggio; trasportava sistemi d'arma automatizzati ed era in grado di missioni estese con rifornimento in volo. A causa del suono basso dei motori Viking, è stato soprannominato "Hoover" dopo il marchio di aspirapolvere.

The Lockheed S-3 Viking is a four-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft that was used by the U.S. Navy primarily for anti-submarine warfare. It was also capable of performing other missions such as aerial refueling, electronic warfare, and surface surveillance. The S-3 Viking entered service in 1974 and was retired in 2009, after more than 30 years of operation. The S-3 Viking was designed to operate from aircraft carriers and had a range of over 2,000 miles. It was equipped with a variety of sensors and weapons, including sonobuoys, torpedoes, missiles, and bombs. The S-3 Viking was known for its versatility and reliability, as well as its distinctive sound, which earned it the nickname “Hoover” after the vacuum cleaner.
