General Characteristics

The RWD-13 was a successful Polish high-wing monoplane designed by the RWD team (Rogalski, Wigura, and Drzewiecki) and produced in the mid-1930s. Developed from the successful RWD-6 and RWD-9 competition aircraft, the RWD-13 was simplified for the civilian touring and utility market. It was celebrated for its excellent handling, stability, and Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) characteristics. It was the most commercially successful aircraft built by RWD.

Design and Powerplant

  • Engine: One PZInż. Major 4 (a Polish-licensed Walter Major) 4-cylinder, air-cooled, inverted in-line engine.
  • Power Output: 97 kW (130 hp).
  • Construction: Mixed construction; the fuselage was a welded steel tube frame with wooden stringers, covered in plywood and canvas. The wings were wooden, covered with plywood and canvas.
  • Design Features: High-wing monoplane configuration with fixed landing gear. Key features included folding wings for easy storage and automatic leading-edge slats and slotted ailerons for excellent STOL performance.
  • Variants: The RWD-13S was a dedicated ambulance variant with a special starboard hatch for loading a stretcher. The RWD-13ST was a convertible touring/sanitary variant.

  • Cruise Speed: Approximately 185 km/h (115 mph, 100 knots).

  • Operational History: Widely used by Polish aero clubs and for civilian utility. It was exported to countries including Spain, Brazil, and Palestine, and saw use as a military liaison aircraft during the Polish September Campaign and the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
  • Notable Service: The RWD-13S air ambulance variant won the “best air ambulance” award at the International Ambulance Aircraft Contest in Luxembourg in 1938.
