General Characteristics

The IAI Arava is a twin-engine, high-wing, short takeoff and landing (STOL) utility transport aircraft, and was Israel Aircraft Industries’ (IAI) first major indigenous aircraft design to enter production. The Arava 202 is an improved version, featuring a slightly longer fuselage and distinctive Whitcomb winglets for better aerodynamic efficiency.

Design and Powerplant

  • Engines: Two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 turboprop engines (or PT6A-36 on the 202 prototype).
  • Power Output: 559 kW (750 shp) each.
  • Fuselage Design: Features a unique, short, barrel-like fuselage with a high wing and twin tail booms extending from the engine nacelles.
  • Loading Access: The entire rear section of the fuselage is hinged and swings open to the side, allowing for easy and rapid loading/unloading of bulky cargo or vehicles.
  • Landing Gear: Fixed tricycle landing gear, chosen to save weight and complexity, ideal for rough-field operations.
  • 202 Specifics: The IAI-202 variant featured a longer fuselage, modified wings, and distinctive Whitcomb winglets at the wingtips for reduced drag.

Performance and Capability

  • Max Cruise Speed: 319 km/h (176 knots, 198 mph) at 3,050 m (10,000 ft).
  • Maximum Range: Approximately 1,056 km (570 nautical miles) with max fuel.
  • Payload Capacity: 2,351 kg (5,184 lb) of cargo.
  • STOL Takeoff Distance: Approximately 463 m (1,520 ft) to clear a 50 ft obstacle.
  • Service Ceiling: 7,620 m (25,000 ft).
  • Military Roles: Besides transport, military Aravas could be fitted with side-firing machine guns and rocket pods for counter-insurgency/gunship roles.
