Die Il-18 war mehrere Jahrzehnte lang eines der wichtigsten Verkehrsflugzeuge der Welt und wurde in großem Umfang exportiert. Aufgrund der Langlebigkeit des Flugzeugs erreichten viele Exemplare über 45.000 Flugstunden und der Typ ist sowohl militärisch als auch (in geringerem Maße) zivil einsatzbereit. Der Nachfolger der Il-18 war die Iljuschin Il-62 mit größerer Reichweite.
