V Fiat G.46 was a military trainer developed in Italy shortly after World War II. The G.46 was a conventional, low-wing monoplane with tailwheel undercarriage, the main units of which retracted inwards. The pilot and instructor sat in tandem under a long canopy. The first prototype, powered by a 205 hp (153 kW) Alfa Romeo 115-Ibis engine, made its maiden flight on 25 June 1947.

General Characteristics

The Fiat CR.46 was a 1930s Italian single-seat fighter biplane designed by Celestino Rosatelli for Fiat, intended to compete for the Regia Aeronautica’s (Italian Air Force) requirement for a new generation of fighters. It was developed shortly after the successful CR.42 Falco and was designed to explore a lighter, higher-performance path. The aircraft featured the classic robust all-metal construction typical of Rosatelli’s designs, but with a more streamlined fuselage than its predecessors. Although the CR.46 demonstrated strong performance and was fast, its design was ultimately sidelined as Italy transitioned toward monoplane fighters (like the Macchi C.200) and focused its biplane production on the already established CR.42. Only one prototype was ever built.

  • Operational Fate: The CR.46 prototype was completed and tested successfully. However, the Regia Aeronautica was already committed to ordering the CR.42 and was quickly shifting its priorities toward monoplane fighters (like the Fiat G.50 and Macchi C.200) which offered higher top speeds.
  • Legacy: Although the CR.46 was never mass-produced, its design and high-speed features (like the streamlined engine cowling and partially retractable gear) served as a stepping stone in Italian fighter design before the transition to fully modern monoplanes.
