The Loening OL was an American two-seat amphibious biplane designed by Grover Loening and built by Loening for the United States Army Air Corps and the United States Navy in the 1920s and 1930s. It was a high-performance aircraft with a retractable landing gear, a large single hull and stabilizing floats under the lower wings. It was powered by a variety of radial or inverted V engines, and could carry a crew of two in a tandem open cockpit. The Loening OL was used for observation, reconnaissance and patrol missions, and some variants were equipped with machine guns or bombs.
The Loening OL was also known as the Loening Amphibian, and was produced in several versions with different designations for the Army and the Navy. The Loening OL was one of the most successful amphibious aircraft of its time, and served in various theaters of operations, including the Pan-American Flight, the China Incident and the World War II.
