Le Carro Armato M13/40 è stato un carro armato italiano della seconda guerra mondiale progettato per sostituire l'M11/39 del Regio Esercito Italiano all'inizio della seconda guerra mondiale. Fu il principale carro armato utilizzato dagli italiani durante la guerra. Il design fu influenzato dal Vickers 6-Ton britannico e si basò sul telaio modificato del precedente M11/39. La produzione dell'M11/39 fu interrotta per poter mettere in produzione l'M13/40. Il nome si riferisce alla "M" di Medio (medio) secondo gli standard italiani di peso dei carri armati dell'epoca, 13 tonnellate era il peso previsto e il 1940 l'anno iniziale di produzione.

General Characteristics and Role

The Carro Armato M13/40 was an Italian medium tank used by the Royal Italian Army (Regio Esercito) during World War II. The “M” designated it as a medium tank, “13” indicated its weight in tonnes, and “40” denoted the year it entered service (1940). Although classified as medium, it was closer in capability to Allied light tanks of the time. It represented a major step up from Italy’s previous light tanks and tankettes, but its design was flawed: it used riveted construction instead of welding, which could cause lethal spalling inside the hull when hit. It saw extensive combat in North Africa, where it quickly proved vulnerable to British 2-pounder and 6-pounder anti-tank guns.
