The Spitfire Mk. VIII replaced the R.A.F.’s Mk. Vc in October 1943. Many pilots preferred the Mk. VIII’s 1,500 mile (2,400 km) flight range with a 170-gallon (644L) drop tank. Pacific-stationed squadrons like No. 79, No. 152 and No.548 flew the Mk. VIII, primarily as a fighter-bomber.
