The CANT Z.506 S Airone was a variant of the CANT Z.506 Airone, a trimotor floatplane produced by the Italian company CANT from 1935. It was used as a transport and postal aircraft by the Italian airline Ala Littoria, and also as a reconnaissance, bomber and air-sea rescue plane during World War II by various air forces. The CANT Z.506 S was a dedicated air-sea rescue version that remained in service until 1959. It had a wooden structure covered with plywood and metal floats. It was powered by three Alfa Romeo 126 RC.34 radial engines that gave it a maximum speed of 370 km/h and an endurance of 23 hours. It could carry up to 1,200 kg of bombs or one 800 kg torpedo, and had four machine guns for defense. The CANT Z.506 S was considered one of the best floatplanes ever built, as it could operate in very rough seas and set several world records for its class.
