The Sukhoi Su-15 was a twinjet supersonic interceptor aircraft developed by the Soviet Union in the 1960s. It was designed to counter the threat of high-altitude strategic bombers from NATO, such as the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. The Su-15 had a powerful radar, a delta wing, and two Tumansky R-11 engines. It could carry various air-to-air missiles, such as the R-8, R-98, and R-60.
The Su-15 entered service in 1965 and remained one of the front-line designs until the 1990s. It was involved in several incidents, such as the shootdown of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in 1983. The Su-15 was gradually replaced by more modern interceptors, such as the MiG-31 and the Su-27.
