Chevrolet CMP 4×4 was a major version of the Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) truck, a standardized series of utility vehicles produced in Canada during World War II for the British Commonwealth forces.

Design and Purpose

  • CMP Origin: These trucks were not modified civilian vehicles but were purpose-built to meet specific British War Office military specifications, emphasizing reliability, commonality of parts, and ease of overseas transport.
  • Cab-Forward Design: The most recognizable feature is the characteristic snub-nosed, or “pug-nosed,” cab. This design (most notably Cab No. 13) pushed the engine and cab forward over the front axle. This compact silhouette met British requirements for maximizing shipping space on cargo vessels.
  • Right-Hand Drive (RHD): All CMP trucks were built with RHD, regardless of manufacture in Canada (a LHD country), to conform with the standards of the British and Commonwealth armies they were intended to serve.
  • Anti-Glare Windscreen: Later models featured a distinctive downward-sloping windscreen, a Canadian innovation intended to reduce glare and prevent reflections that could be spotted by enemy aircraft.

Mechanical Specifications (Common Models like C60L)

The most common Chevrolet 4×4 models were the C15A (15-cwt / 0.75-ton) and the C60L (60-cwt / 3-ton long-wheelbase).

Deployment and Legacy

  • Global Use: Chevrolet CMP trucks formed the backbone of military logistics for Canadian, British, Australian, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth forces, serving in every major theatre of operations, including North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe.
  • Versatility: The robust CMP chassis supported a huge variety of specialized bodies beyond the standard General Service (GS) cargo version. These included mobile workshops, ambulances, water tankers, fuel bowsers, and Field Artillery Tractors (FATs).
  • Production Scale: General Motors of Canada manufactured over 200,000 CMP trucks during the war, making the Chevrolet models an absolutely essential, if unsung, element of the Allied war machine.
