The Battle of Stalingrad was fought from July 1942 to February 2, 1943, for control of the eponymous city, now Volgograd, between the forces of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and those of the Third Reich. They include the approach of the city by the German armies, the urban fighting for its conquest, then the Soviet counter-offensive, until the encirclement and surrender of the German troops. All of this fighting, in and out of the city, left one to two million dead in just over six months, or 4,500 to 9,000 dead a day.
